The broad aims of the Kolkata Immersion experience is to give the girls an education and understanding of issues in the developing world in conjunction with some first-hand experience of life on the ground, albeit in a safe and sheltered manner. It is hoped that this experience will act as a precursor to a longer-term programme linking Loreto College, St Stephen’s Green with the Indian province of West Bengal, and as a spur to keeping development education initiatives on the school curriculum.
Over the past few years we have established links with our colleagues in Kolkata and have been liaising with Sr. Monica (Kolkata Mary Ward Social Centre) and Sr. Sabrina who have been instrumental in organising our day to day activities. Here is a student account about the project.
