This year, the Student Council held the annual School Spirit Week from the 14th to the 16th of March. The theme was Childhood, and school-wide fundraisers were held in support of the Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice, as well as fun events for the school community.
The week began with the School Quiz on Monday over the intercom, and the introduction to “Spirit Week FM: Student Radio”. As the students entered the school in the morning they were greeted by face-painters and the blaring of childhood music. The quiz was held before lunch and got everyone in high spirits, with prizes for the winners in each year group. Spirit Week FM was hosted by the Student Council Class Representatives each day over the intercom, with students having the option of sending in their song requests and messages to friends. There was also two special guests, Ms. Tierney and Mr. Griffin, who kindly lent their time to share their experiences of childhood with the students, with many colourful stories coming from County Clare! It certainly had everyone in high spirits.
On Tuesday, a dress up day with the theme of “Characters from Children’s Books” was held, and the school was bursting with colour and creativity as the girls made the extra effort to dress festively, with a variety of costumes all shapes and sizes, both home-made and shop-bought. The girls were in for a treat at lunchtime with the school’s first Chocolate Factory held in the canteen, with chocolate fountains flowing, sweets on display (even hanging from the walls) and a bake sale held, all the while with requests flooding in to Student Radio and songs setting the mood. The Chocolate Factory was a huge success, raising over five hundred euro, and leaving all the visitors with full stomachs!
Wednesday was the final day of Spirit Week, and a Breakfast Morning was held. It was a great start to a busy day for the students, and with a €2 entry cost for all you can eat, the girls, and some teachers, were spoilt for choice! All types of bread, cakes, jams and cereals were generously donated by local shops, supermarkets and cafés, as well as tea & coffee being served. The canteen was packed with people all enjoying their hearty breakfast and the day went by without a hitch. We raised over five hundred euro, a brilliant result.
Altogether we raised €1063.73 for the Laura Lynn Children’s Hospital, which was a fantastic amount. The students all had a great week, making this a great success for the Student Council. This week couldn’t have gone ahead though without the tireless help and support of the Student Council Liaison Teacher, Ms. Maverly, who ensured the week went smoothly for the students. The council would also like to thank all the staff who supported the week, from Ms. McAteer who helped organize the fundraisers, to Lilly & Laura who cleaned up after the fundraisers, and all the kind words from the teachers and the principal, Ms. Barrett. Of course we never could have raised as much money as we did without the donations to the breakfast morning by all the local shops, cafés and supermarkets, which we are extremely grateful for. We know the girls will look forward to next year’s Spirit Week and wish the Student Council 2011/2012 the best of luck!
