The pupils of Loreto College, St Stephen’s Green have surprisingly good facilities for sport considering the location of the school in the heart of Dublin city. The large sportshall, with its beautiful sprung maple floor, has been central to these activities since its official opening in 1989. A wonderful asset, all pupils have the opportunity to use the hall each week for the various activities available. It has been used for Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cross-Country Running, Cricket, Dance, Hockey, Soccer and Tennis. In the hall are changing rooms, showers, toilets, a staff office, small kitchen and an area upstairs for the storage of equipment, books and fitness videos, a television, teacher resources and a table tennis table. The sportshall facilities are rented out at night to certain groups who find the central location very convenient after work.
A recent addition to the Loreto sporting facilities is an Astroturf pitch. The pitch is a wonderful resource benefiting everyone and it is thanks to the combined forces of the Board of Management and the Parent’s Committee that it was put in place during the 2004 summer break, It is possible to play a variety of sports on this all-weather surface, such as Hockey, Tennis, Rounders and to train for other sports such as Athletics.
