Tennis Season Review – Junior A Team

Ciara Walsh 3B, Captain, writes:

After several weeks of trials the team was sorted and the Junior A team consisted of Alanah Quinsey, Ciana Bowe, Breanne Flynn, Michelle Horan, Roisin O’Donovan and myself, Ciara Walsh. Our first match of the Leinster League was a home match against Mount Sackville with our three pairs winning in straight sets. For our second match, also a home match, against St Andrews we had two girls from first year, Emma Garry and Julianne Murphy, playing for us and they did us proud with another three match win. Our third match was away against St Mary’s in Naas which we won 2-1. Having won our section of the league, the following week we played against Alexandra College at home in the semi finals. Again we won this 2-1. We were through to the final. After a long few days of practising, we all turned up to Lansdowne Tennis Club on a lovely sunny day to play our matches. Alanah, Ciana, Breanne and Michelle all won in straight sets which meant Loreto won overall. With Roisin and my match tied at one set all, our match was declared a draw. We won an amazing trophy and we each got a medal. The previous week we had also played the Loreto League where we overcame Loreto Dalkey by two games to win the title and the shield. Thanks to Ms Crinion for keeping us all motivated and especially for organising the white hoodies which definitely helped us to win. This was the first time ever Loreto St Stephens Green won the Leinster Junior A cup. It was a great season for all of us and we hope to do the same next year!

Loreto defeated by St. Colmcilles in Senior Camogie Final

A scoring spree in the second quarter of this match was the difference between the teams as St. Colmcilles edged out Loreto in the Senior Camogie Championship Final. Loreto started well but were unable to convert their early dominance of possession into scores. A St. Colmcilles point against the run of play opened the scoring. Aisling Dargan took a good score to level the match. Then St Colmcilles took over and scored 2-3 in a ten minute period. Deirdre Johnstone hit back with a point to leave Loreto 8 points behind at the break. Straight from the restart good play by Lorna Begley and Amy Ryan set up Shona Quinn for a goal. With Catherine King and Brigitte Walsh dominant in defence Loreto created chance after chance. Unfortunately Loreto didn't convert these chances and St Colmcilles struck for another goal. Shona Quinn quickly responded with a goal and a point to bring Loreto back into contention. However we just couldn't get another two scores to get back level. Two late points from St Colmcilles sealed their victory on a scoreline of Loreto College 2-3 St. Colmcilles 3-6. The Loreto team were exhausted at the end of the match as they had put in a massive effort but the ball just didn't fall our way on the day.

Loreto College: Helen Lynch, Orla Kelly, Catherine King, Sinead Henry-Bezy, Emma O'Leary, Brigitte Walsh, Orla Hogan, Alison Stenson, Deirdre Johnstone (0-1), Amy Ryan, Lorna Begley (c), Orla Core, Anna Woods, Shona Quinn (2-1), Aisling Dargan (0-1), Aisling Murchan, Ciara O'Hare, Niamh Freaney, Sarah Nolan, Sinead Murray, Lucy Brady, Eleanor Buggy, Niamh O'Brien, Kate O'Dwyer.

Well done to the Senior B Tennis Team who beat Holy Child, Killiney.

Loreto defeated by Manor House in Senior Final

Manor House defeated Loreto College in the Dublin Schools Senior Football final yesterday (11/5). Loreto put in a fantastic performance but three late scores by Manor House proved to be the difference between the two teams. Loreto started the stronger with Sarah Powell kicking three points in a row. After a great piece of team play Deirdre Murphy scored an excellent goal to push Loreto further ahead. The whole Loreto defence was outstanding in the opening period and they limited a strong Manor House attack to just two points. A point from Aisling King left Loreto ahead at the break. Unfortunately Manor House came more into the game during the second half. They struck for two quick points but Loreto responded with scores from Sarah Powell and Alison Smith. A fortunate Manor House goal left Loreto with just a two point lead about midway through the second half. Loreto kept pressing but just couldn’t add to their total. A Manor House point followed by a goal left Loreto trailing with only six minutes left on the clock. The Loreto girls never gave up and kept pushing forward to try and recover the lead. This left space for Manor House to attack on the counter attack and they finished the game with two late break away goals. The final score line was Manor House 4-6 Loreto College 1-6. The effort that each and every Loreto player put into that match can not be overstated. There was not one player who didn’t perform exceptionally well on the day. It just wasn’t to be our day but with every member of the panel underage again next year confidence is high that these girls can go on to win a Dublin Championship.

Loreto College: Elaine Mongan, Catherine Martin, Lorna Colgan, Aoife Lawlor, Alison Smith (0-1), Laura Keelan, Eimear Linehan, Caroline Brogan (c), Deirdre Murphy (1-0), Deirdre Johnstone, Aisling King (0-1), Aisling Colclough, Clare Kelly, Sarah Powell (0-4), Niamh O’Brien, Katie McCarthy, Mairead Conway, Aideen Lambe, Helen Moran, Elaine Begley, Aisling Murchan, Sarah Keartland, Rebecca Fitzpatrick, Aisling Woodgate, Aisling Brazil, Zoe Watchorn.

Loreto Defeated in Under 16 Gaelic Final

Loreto College were defeated by Manor House in the Dublin Schools Junior 'D' final last Friday (23/4) in St Anne's Park, Raheny. Manor House got off to an excellent start, kicking a series of well taken points. This made things difficult for the Loreto team but they dug deep and reeled off four points in a row (one of which was probably the score of the match from Eimear Linehan). Unfortunately Manor House got two late goals at the end of the half to maintain their strong advantage. The second half was a tighter affair with both sides creating chances. Sarah Powell struck a well finished goal and Deirdre Murphy finished a strong solo run with a well taken point. On the day Manor House showed a bit more experience and were more clinical in converting their possession into scores and they ran out winners on a score line of Loreto College 1-6, Manor House 6-9. This was the second year that the school has fielded an Under 16 team and to make the Dublin final was a fantastic achievement. The girls played some great football throughout the year and always give their all when out on the football field. Well done girls.

Loreto College: Elaine Mongan (Captain), Aisling Murchan, Lorna Colgan, Róisín O'Donovan, Aoife Lawlor, Catherine Martin, Eimear Linehan (0-1), Deirdre Murphy (0-2), Alison Smith, Katie McCarthy, Sarah Powell (1-3), Helen Moran, Sarah Keartland, Deirdre Johnstone, Elaine Begley, Rebecca Fitzpatrick, Helen Lynch, Zoe Watchorn, Aoife Gallagher, Emma Colgan, Aisling Stokes, Shannon Rock, Muireann Quinn.

Loreto defeat Coláiste Íosagáin to qualify for Dublin Championship Camogie Final

Loreto College defeated Coláiste Íosagáin in the Dublin Championship Camogie Semi-finals. Coláiste Íosagáin played with the aid of the wind in the first half and started the stronger. They created a number of good chances but Helen Lynch made a succession of excellent saves to keep the scores level. A fine long range point from Deirdre Johnstone then gave Loreto the lead. Coláiste Íosagáin kept creating chances but with Catherine King and Brigitta Walsh in excellent form the Loreto defence began to get the upper hand. Shona Quinn struck for a point to extend the Loreto lead. Coláiste Íosagáin then struck for a well deserved goal but their lead was short lived as a Shona Quinn shot dropped into the net to leave Loreto ahead at the break. Loreto played much better in the second half with every player working hard to gain and maintain possession. Aisling Dargan scored a point which was then cancelled out by a point from Coláiste Íosagáin. Coláiste Íosagáin still looked dangerous when they attacked and Helen Lynch was once again called upon to make some impressive saves. Then a great pass from Orla Core set up Alison Stenson to score a second Loreto goal. A goal from Aisling Dargan then gave Loreto a strong lead and she followed this up with another goal following a strong solo run from Kate O'Dwyer. Loreto finished winners on a score line of Loreto College 4-3 Coláiste Íosagáin 1-2.

Loreto College: Helen Lynch, Orla Kelly, Catherine King, Emma O'Leary, Brigtta Walsh, Orla Hogan, Alison Stenson (1-0), Deirdre Johnstone (0-1), Niamh O'Brien, Lorna Begley (c), Orla Core, Eleanor Buggy, Shona Quinn (1-1), Aisling Dargan (2-1), Kate O'Dwyer, Anna Woods, Aisling Murchan, Ciara O'Hare, Niamh Freaney, Sarah Nolan.

Loreto defeat Skerries to reach Under 16 Gaelic Final

Well done to the Under 16 Gaelic Football team who defeated Skerries Community School in the Semi-Finals of the Dublin Football Championship. There was a strong breeze with Loreto playing with the aid of the wind in the first half. This made a good start crucial and Loreto didn't disappoint as they dominated the opening half. After a few missed opportunities, points from Deirdre Murphy and Alison Smith and a goal from Sarah Powell gave Loreto a good lead. With Zoe Watchorn and Alison Smith winning plenty of possession in midfield and the Loreto half back line dominating their opponents, the Loreto forwards had a succession of chances. All the forwards were showing well for the ball and they combined for some good scores with goals from Sarah Powell and Katie McCarthy and points from Deirdre Murphy (2), Powell and McCarthy. Loreto led at the break 3-7 to 1-1. It was a different game in the second half as Loreto found it harder to play against the breeze. Skerries created more chances but the Loreto defence worked hard with Elaine Mongan making some good saves. A Deirdre Johnstone goal kept Loreto in command but Skerries cut the deficit to two goals. Loreto finished strongly with a goal from Katie McCarthy and a goal and a point from Sarah Powell. The final score was Loreto College 6-8 Skerries 3-4. Loreto now play Manor House in the Dublin final with a place in the Leinster final at stake.

Loreto College: Elaine Mongan (c), Aisling Murchan, Róisín O'Donovan, Aoife Lawlor, Eimear Linehan, Deirdre Murphy (0-3), Catherine Martin, Alison Smith (0-1), Zoe Watchorn, Katie McCarthy (2-1), Sarah Powell (3-3), Helen Moran, Sarah Keartland, Deirdre Johnstone (1-0), Elaine Begley, Rebecca Fitzpatrick, Aoife Gallagher.

Loreto defeated by Hartstown in Under 14 Gaelic

A strong team from Hartstown Community School defeated Loreto College in the Under 14 Leinster Football Championship. Loreto were playing against a very strong wind in the first half and found it difficult to keep the ball in their opponents half. Hartstown were dominating possession but the Loreto defence worked hard to prevent scores. Aisling Stokes made some excellent saves with Fiona Gallagher and Alice McDonald intercepting frequent Hartstown attacks. Unfortunately Hartstown’s pressure told and they built up a commanding half time lead. The second half was a much closer affair with Loreto creating a lot more chances. The Loreto team kept fighting for every ball and was rewarded when Lauren Healy struck for a goal. The revival continued with Emma Colgan, Kate O'Dwyer and Shannon Rock all kicking good points. Hartstown were only able to manage one goal in the second half but were too far ahead to be caught. The final scoreline was Hartstown 8-5 Loreto College 1-3.

Loreto College: Aisling Stokes, Hannah McGuinness, Fiona Gallagher, Alice McDonald, Caitlin Brownlow, Kate O'Dwyer (0-1), Niamh Lawlor, Anna Woods, Shannon Rock (0-1), Ciara Barry, Emma Colgan (0-1) (c), Katie McGuinness, Rebecca Begley, Muireann Quinn, Lauren Healy (1-0), Aoife Gallagher, Stephanie Prendergast, Catherine O'Dwyer, Sarah Quinn, Yvonne Walsh, Alex Kilmartin, Emily McAndrew.

Senior Gaelic: Loreto Win in Extra Time

Loreto College won their Dublin Schools Senior Gaelic Football Quarter-Final on Tuesday (23/2) against St. Paul’s, Greenhills. The match was played in poor weather conditions with snow and rain falling throughout the match. St. Paul’s started the better, playing with a strong breeze at their backs. They struck for two early goals and a point to give them a good lead. However the Loreto defence upped their game with Eimear Linehan putting a lot of pressure on St. Paul’s most dangerous forward and Laura Keelan making a few strong forward breaks, Loreto began to work their way back into the match. Aisling Brazil scored a point before a Clare Kelly goal reduced the deficit to a single goal. Another point from Clare Kelly and a response from St Paul’s left Loreto a goal behind at the break. Loreto dominated possession in the second half with Caroline Brogan and Zoe Watchorn winning a lot of possession and the defence keeping St Paul’s scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the half. After a few missed chances Loreto finally got some important scores as Deirdre Johnstone struck for two excellently finished goals after some nice play from the Loreto forwards. Unfortunately St. Paul’s managed to pull a goal back and send the match into extra-time. St. Paul’s got the only score of the first period of extra time to leave Loreto trailing again with only five minutes to go. At this stage St. Paul’s looked like going further ahead but an excellently save by Elaine Mongan kept Loreto in the game. Loreto never gave up and finished strongly with Sarah Powell scoring two points to give Loreto the lead. A Caroline Brogan goal gave Loreto a four point lead but a St. Paul’s goal meant there was only a single point in the difference for the last two minutes of the game. Happily Loreto held on for the win on a scoreline of Loreto College 4-4, St. Paul’s 4-3 (AET). The girls put in a great performance in tough conditions and are now looking forward to the Dublin final. Well done to all involved.

Loreto defeated by Lucan in keenly contested Camogie final

Loreto were defeated by Lucan Community College in the Dublin Senior Camogie Division 3 final yesterday (20 January) in Ballyboden. The game was closely fought throughout with both sides putting in a tremendous effort. Lucan opened the scoring with two well taken points from play. Lucan had the best of the opening exchanges but strong play from the Loreto defence led by Catherine King and Brigitta Walsh kept the score down. Loreto created a string of chances but unfortunately were unable to convert these into scores. Then disaster struck as Lucan struck for two goals in the space of sixty seconds. Loreto fought back and Shona Quinn was taken down as she went though on goal. She got up and buried the penalty in the net to bring Loreto back into the game. The sides swapped points to leave Lucan five points clear at the break. Lucan started the second half brightly and added another two goals. Loreto never gave up and dominated possession for the remainder of the match with Deirdre Johnstone, Alison Stenson and Eleanor Buggy winning a lot of ball. Unfortunately the Lucan goalkeeper was in inspired form and made a string of impressive saves to maintain the Lucan lead. An excellently taken goal from Aisling King and point from Eleanor Buggy reduced the gap but Loreto were unable to match Lucans score. Lucan won on a scoreline of 4-4 to 2-2. It was a great game of camogie between two talented teams who fought hard for every ball. Lucan were just a bit more clinical in converting their chances.

Loreto: Helen Lynch, Catherine King, Orla Kelly, Emma O’Leary, Brigitta Walsh, Orla Hogan, Deirdre Johnstone, Alison Stenson, Orla Core, Eleanor Buggy (0-1), Aisling King (1-0), Shona Quinn (1-1), Lorna Begley (c), Aisling Dargan, Mairead Conway, Amy Ryan, Aisling Murchan, Sinead Murray, Ciara O’Hare.

Loreto College Edged Out By Beaufort In Camogie Shield Final

The Junior Camogie team recently played in the Dublin “B” Shield final. The match was held in Ballyboden and we were up against a strong Loreto Beaufort team. The competition was late being organised this year and as a result we had to play our semi-final the day before the final. In the semi-final the girls put in a fantastic performance to defeat Coláiste Chillian by 6-2 to 3-1. In the first half we were playing against a strong wind. In spite of this we opened the scoring when Evangeline Morris finished to the net from close range. A Coláiste Chillian goal soon levelled the game but with Alison Stenson and Eleanor Buggy winning a huge amount of ball in the middle third it wasn't long before Loreto took the lead again. Niamh O'Brien scored a goal and Alison Stenson scored a goal and a point to leave Loreto ahead by three points at the break. The defence had worked very hard against the breeze with Tara English and Emma O'Leary playing particularly well. Loreto dominated the second half, playing with the wind. Anytime Coláiste Chillian broke up the field Orla Kelly and Brigitta Walsh made it difficult for them to get any scores. Goals by Stenson, Morris and Katie McCarthy as well as a point from Amy Ryan meant that Loreto ran out comfortable winners.

The final was a classic game of two halves. There was a gale force wind blowing down the field and in fact neither team was able to score when playing against this wind. We played with the breeze in the first half with Alison Stenson again dominating in the middle. She scored 1-2 and Eleanor Buggy also got a goal to leave us ahead by 8 points at the break. It could have been even more as one shot from Buggy hit the underside of the crossbar only to bounce down on the goal-line and run away to safety. The girls knew that they would be up against it in the second half and they put in a tireless effort to try and win the shield. Beaufort played well but found it hard to get scores against our courageous defence and with five minutes to go we were still a goal up. A Beaufort point closed the gap to two points. A good break away looked like it might lead to a score when Niamh O'Brien was tripped as she ran through the Beaufort defense. Unfortunately the referee waved play on and from the next passage of play Beaufort got the winning goal. It is tough to lose any match by one point (Loreto Beaufort 2-3 Loreto College, Stephen's Green 2-2) but the girls can be very proud of the effort they put in over the course of the year. Having won the “C” shield last year, to come runner up in the “B” shield this year is a fantastic achievement. Well done to all the players.
