1st Year A v Kings Hospital, 25/1/12

The 1st Year A’s played their third league game today against KH. Despite the terrible weather conditions, the standard of hockey from both teams was very high. Loreto dominated the first half and took the lead thanks to a goal from Alex Griffin. The girls created a few more chances in the first half and were very unlucky not to have a bigger league at half time. The second half was much more even, with chances at both ends. KH managed to equalize late in the game from short corner. The match finished in a draw. This was another great performance from the girls and it puts us in a great position to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition, with one league match left on Saturday!

Minor C v Loreto Bray, 21/1/12

The Minor Cs had a great league win against Loreto Bray this morning. The girls played some great hockey and fully deserved the win. Despite creating many chances, the winning goal didn't come until late in the second half, with Laura Lardner producing a great finish into the corner of the goal! Hannah Taylor was superb in midfield and Rebecca Kelly was rock solid in defence! Joint players of the match were Isabel Lynch and Freya McCrum who were excellent throughout.

Junior B v Our Lady's Grove, 14/1/12

The Junior B's pulled off a very convincing 4-0 defeat over Our Lady's Grove in their latest Leinster League match. Despite only having the bare 11 players and having to contend with a dreaded grit pitch, the girls did brilliantly. They played tactically and intelligently. Goals in the first half came from Anna Woods and Aoife Griffin. The second half saw Claudia Murphy and once again Anna Woods getting on the scoreboard - Anna's camogie skills clearly served her well on the grit! Combined with their pre-Christmas win against John Scottus, and draw with Andrews' early in the year, this result will hopefully see the girls through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Cross Country

Well done to all the girls who participated in the Cross Country, especially to Breanne Flynn, Aoife O’Reilly, Regan McGlynn and Sarah Torrans who qualified for Leinster.

Senior 2 win 1-0

The senior 2's got off to a winning start in their first league match back after the Christmas break. They took on Holy Faith Clontarf in a very close match. Chances were created at both ends with player of the match, Sarah Redmond, making some super saves for Loreto. Dee was brilliant in the centre and regularly switched the ball left and right out to Sophie and Anna who had some great runs. Eva was also very effective up front. The goal came in the last couple of minutes from a well worked short corner and the girls hung on in the last few minutes to earn a great win!!!

Minor A v St Joesph of Cluny, 3/12/11

The Minor A’s winning streak came to an end in Killiney on Saturday morning. The first half saw the minors under attack straight away, with an early goal from Cluny. Loreto took a while to recover from the early goal and getting used to playing on a grit pitch. By the second half Loreto began to dominate the game unfortunately they never got the much needed goal. Kate Fullen received person of the match.

Senior 2 V Cluny, 3/12/11

The Senior 2 team played Cluny in the league on Saturday. The girls played really well from the start and were in the lead at half time, thanks to a well worked goal from Ruth Dargan. Cluny managed to equalize early in the second half. Despite creating a few good scoring chances after this, we were not able to get a winning goal. The team played very well today and certainly deserved at least a draw. Player of the match was Hazel Bergin.

1st Year A V High School, 3/12/11

The 1st Year A team played their second Leinster League game against a very strong High School team on Saturday. High School took the lead very early in the game thanks to a brilliant piece of individual skill. The girls settled into the game after this and we drew level with a goal from Emily Kelly just before half time. We played really well in the second half and Alex Griffin finished off a great move to put us in the lead. We defended really well after this and managed to hang on for the win. There were great performances from Nicole, Jessica, Caoilainn and Caoimhe. Special thank you to Elizabeth Bolger, the team captain, who dragged herself from her sick bed to play the match! Player of the match was Sarah Torrans, who had an outstanding game in defence. This second win in a row puts us in a strong position in our group, with two more games to come in January.

Junior A v Alex, 26/11/11

The Junior A team continued their winning streak in their fourth Leinster League game, this time against Alex. This proved to be one of the most difficult games for the girls this year, Alex had some skilful players and put up a good fight. Our girls coped well, however. Ailbhe Colclough and her teammates in defence did brilliantly to keep Alex out. Up front we had a couple of near chances, with some great crosses from Isobel Cunningham and runs from Aoife Corcoran, but it wasn't until about 4 minutes from the end that the goal finally came, Aisling Stokes positioning herself perfectly to pop it in on the far post. Player of the Match went to Ciara Barry, who was unstoppable in midfield. The girls are now in a very strong position and will hopefully qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. Their final group fixture against Our Lady's Terenure will take place after Christmas

1st Year A 4-0 Newbridge, 23/11/11

The 1st Year A team got their Leinster League campaign underway with a good win over Newbridge College. The girls created lots of chances in the first half and as a result we went into half time in the lead, with Hannah Smith and Kate Danaher (2) getting on the score sheet. We continued to play well in the second half, with Doireann Boylan finishing off a great move to score our fourth goal. There were outstanding performances from Sarah Torrans, Nicole Hemeryck, Alex Griffin and Emily Kelly, with Player of the Match going to Kate Danaher for her 2 goals and all round hard work in midfield. Great work from everyone and hopefully the girls can repeat this sort of form in their next league game!

Senior A v Notre Dame 3-0, 19/11/11

The Senior A team played an outstanding league match against Notre Dame winning 3-0. The girls dominated the game throughout with many scoring chances. The forwards put on huge pressure not allowing Notre Dame out of their circle. The defence were strong from start to finish shutting down any of the oppositions’ attack with Aoife Kelly making some superb tackles. Our first goal was well deserved from Alana Quinsy who had been threatening the goalie for some time. The next goal was a great result of team work, working the ball out of the back field, passing through mid-field and down the right wing with a great first time finish by Ciara Walsh. The final goal, to ensure the win was scored by Jenny Keogh who positioned herself excellently to finish Ciara’s cross into the circle. This win puts the team back into a strong position to qualify from our group. Players of the match, with outstanding performances were Jill O Farrell and Jenny Keogh, both of whom showed incredible work rate and determination.
Well done to all

Senior B v St Andrews College, 19/11/11

The Senior B team were narrowly defeated on Saturday in their league fixture against St Andrews. We started very well putting the opposition’s defence under a lot of pressure with many threatening runs from Eva Ferguson and Sophie Masterson up front. Unfortunately Andrews scored on a fast break just before half time leaving the girls one nil down. In the second half Loreto came out very determined and played some great hockey. Deirdre Murphy led the defence making several crucial tackles to break down the Andrews attack. Despite our hard work and determination Loreto were not able to score. We were very unlucky in this game but still hold a very strong position in our group. Player of the match was Deirdre Murphy who showed great leadership and hard work throughout the game.
Well done to all

Junior B v St Joseph's Cluny, 19/11/11

The Junior B team were unlucky not to get a result against Cluny in their second Leinster League fixture. The teams were evenly matched, but unfortunately Cluny slipped one past us just before half time, and we just couldn't manage to equalize in the second half, despite a couple of well executed short corners. Aoife Griffin, as always showed great determination up front, meanwhile Ellen Kelly had a great game in defence. Player of the Match went to Anna Woods, who never stopped throughout and created a string of chances. Finally, a huge thank you to Minor goalkeeper Ciara Beatty, who subbed up for us at the last minute, and had a super game - the opposition's coach even commented on it!

Dublin - All Ireland Champions

On Thursday the 20th of October, three of the Dublin players paid a visit to our school, with the Sam Maguire cup! Bernard Brogan, James Brogan and Michael Darragh MacAuley arrived at the junior school at lunchtime. Both senior and junior school girls had been anticipating their arrival. When the bell rang in the yard excitement grew. The junior girls had their photos taken with the players and Sam. While this was going on the senior girls waited impatiently for them to come into the hall for the first glimpse of the players and Sam. The lads could never have been prepared for the screams and cheers that greeted them. The atmosphere was fantastic. They spoke about the win and we thanked them for coming in to visit. We had time to take some photographs which was great. It was a memorable occasion for the school, especially for all the Dublin fans. The girls gave them such a warm welcome and congratulated the lads. They did Dublin proud, let’s hope it we keep Sam in Dublin next year!

Indoor Rowing Championships 2011

On Sunday last, 20th November, Eimear Lambe, Jenny Harrington, Eleanor Walsh and myself, Megan Kennedy, participated in the Indoor Rowing Championships, for the first time.  It was held in Trinity College Sports Centre and we took part in a 2000 metre piece.  As a team we decided to break it up by doing five hundred metres each with one member on the ergometer (rowing machine) while the other three held her feet in place and at the same time holding the machine to keep it from moving.  As it was a five hundred piece it consists of short outbursts, so we could get our scores down low.  The four of us all row for Commercial Rowing Club and this was a great advantage going into this competition.  Eimear went first, Jenny second, Eleanor third and I went last.  It was a tough race but we managed to finish it in a time of 7 minutes 29 seconds which brought us into third place.  I thought it was a great achievement for our first race together.

Minor C 0-1 St Andrews  19/11/11
The Minor C team played a very entertaining league game this morning. Loreto were on the attack for the majority of the first half and were very unlucky not to be in the lead at half time. The second half was more even, with both teams creating good scoring chances. Andrews took the lead early in the second half and despite a huge effort from the girls, Loreto could not manage to equalize. A great effort from everyone, with Hannah Taylor receiving player of the match for her great performance in her very first hockey match for the school.

Junior C’s – 19/11/11

The Junior C's played their third league match of the season on Saturday against Andrews. The first half didn't start too well with the girls finding themselves very unfortunately two nil behind by half time. However, the second half was a different story. Loreto came out extremely determined and every girl on the team gave 110%. Judith scored a well-deserved goal before Emily Noonan scored a second to level the game. The defense was super with Ruth doing everything possible to keep the ball out of our defending circle. Player of the match, Rebecca Begley, was outstanding throughout and the girls were delighted with earning a 2-2 draw on the day.

Equestrian Club

Our second interschool’s Show Jumping Competition was held in Killossery Lodge Stud on 13th November. It was a very nice mild dry day, with an excess of 20 teams competing. The show jumping course was strong and quite long, making for few clear rounds. Well done to Fiona Carey, Zoe Coakley, Doireann Boylan and Abby Coakley who all  finished on just four faults each, in the individual competition, while in the team event, the four riders collectively had an unfortunate three show jumping poles down to finish with twelve faults. A great day was had by all and everyone rode very well.

Junior A v Loreto Bray, 12/11/11

The Junior A's played their best match of the season so far, securing a 2-1 victory over Bray, extremely early last Saturday morning. Monday's unpopular fitness sessions seemed to pay off, the girls' work-rate was outstanding throughout the entire game. Despite being the better side, the score line remained 0-0 at half time, but in the second half things started to go our way. Aoife Corcoran, who received a nasty bang to the face in the first half, was unstoppable up front, putting two past the keeper in quick succession. Bray replied with a well-worked goal soon after, however, keeping us on our toes. The girls defended solidly however, in particular Martha MacLachlan. Ciara Barry and Ciara Deevey also had good games in midfield. All the players, supporters and coach breathed a sigh of relief with the final whistle. Player of the Match went to Aoife Corcoran. 3 wins out of 3 for the Junior A's - well done girls!

Loreto Swimming Gala

On Friday the 11th of November the Loreto swimming gala took place. There were lots of entries and everybody was excited to swim! We had lots of supporters which really encouraged the girls. Throughout the day there was a great atmosphere around the pool with people cheering. Everybody swam brilliantly and really tried their best which was great to see. The results of the day were brilliant with Peggy Flanagan coming 3rd in the butterfly, Eimile Thornton coming 3rd in the freestyle and Tara English coming 2nd in the back crawl. Over all, we also won the spirit award which was an amazing achievement for the school as we had never won it before. It was a great day for everybody and would have only happened with the help of Yvonne, Brendan and Jane Kelly, Ms Green and Ms Crinion and all the student and parents that helped take part in the gala.

Cross Country:Blackrock – 9th November 2011

On Wednesday, 9th November, a group of runners went to Blackrock College to represent our school at a Cross Country Competition. Our first race was the  Minor Girls and we had six girls running the 1000 metre course with all girls completing the race.

Our next race was our Junior Girls who completed a distance of 1,500 metres.  All of the girls completed the race, all of whom finished in the top twenty.  Well done to Regan McGlynn who came second and the team came third overall.

Our final race was Inters and Seniors who ran together due to the small numbers running.  Unfortunately, there was some confusion over this race and one of our team missed out on the race but we know she would have done really well anyway.

Overall the girls did really well and it was great practice for the East Leinsters in February.

Minor A 5 - 0 Notre Dame: Nov 12, 2011
This morning saw the Minor A's continue their winning streak with a 5-0 victory over Notre Dame in YMCA. Loreto's short corners were working very well, with 3 of the 5 goals coming from them. Ellie was quick to score the first goal from a rebound shot from Ellen. Ciara Griffin and Ellen got the second and third goal from shots from the top of the circle. Ellie got her second goal from open play as did Sorcha. With all the great work from the defence all the way to the forwards, it left Ciara Beatty with little work to do. A great team effort by everyone and especially Ellie Wilde receiving player of the match.

Minor B 0 - 1 High School: Nov 12, 2011

Minor B's were very unlucky this morning in High school coming away with a 0-1 loss. The first half saw all the action in High schools half with Loreto putting huge pressure on. There were many near goals. The early in the second half saw High school getting a lucky break away and scoring. Loreto were unable to get the goal back. Good effort all round, with Sally Bergin receiving player of the match.

Senior 3 v Wesley, 22nd October 2011
The Senior 3's had their third league match of the season against Wesley. Having already won and drawn their previous two league matches they were in a great position and they were determined to get another win. Straight from the first whistle Loreto were on the attack and it stayed this way for the majority of the game. Claire McDonald and Michelle Horan scored the two important goals that saw Loreto win the match 2-1. The entire team played super and never gave up trying to score. Michelle, Kate, Sinead and Claire all created great opportunities. Catherine Parsons and Anna Conlon linked up brilliantly in midfield. Player of the match, Anna Conlon, had too much pace for Wesley to cope with and didn't stop running for the entire game. Overall a super win and a great performance by all!

Junior D's v Alex, 22nd October 2011
The Junior D's had their second league match against Alex. Unfortunately Loreto lost 3-0 but the score certainly did not reflect the game or the girls’ effort. Even against a strong Alex team, the forwards managed to create some wonderful opportunities and Aoife Moran had a great game. The defence -Alyce Grant, Hannah Byrne, Ita McGuiness and Sophie McCann - worked so hard all through the game but unfortunately it wasn't our day. Player of the match, Julie Masterson, had a wonderful game in midfield. Hard luck girls!

Taekwon-Do European Championships in Slovakia

We congratulate Chloe Aboud, 4T, on her outstanding achievement in winning a European gold medal and European Champion title in the recent Taekwon-Do European Championships in Slovakia. Chloe is to be commended for her tremendous dedication, perseverance and hard work in her sport. This is a remarkable accomplishment and we in Loreto, Stephen’s Green are extremely proud of her.
Chloe has written the following account of her experiences in Slovakia with the Irish team.

The Taekwon-do European Championships were held in Slovakia from the 23rd to the 26th of October. The Irish team consisted of thirty-five competitors and four National coaches.

The European Championships are held annually whereas the World Championships are held every two years. This was my second European Championships to compete in. I took a bronze in the first Euros I competed in, which was held in Sweden, April 2010. I also took a bronze in the previous World Championship which was held in New Zealand last March.

Each country is allowed to select two competitors for each weight category for both the junior females and the junior males, but only one competitor for the senior females and the senior males. So as you can imagine there is a lot of competition for those slots!

To be selected to represent your country in International Championships you must be a black belt and endeavour to win each of the "selection" competitions. The person who wins the most "selection" competitions is given the number one slot (The first slot) and the second best competitor gets the number two slot (The second slot).
It took an awful lot of hard work and dedication to be selected to represent Ireland in the European Championships again - I had to train for 20 to 30 hours per week.

I represented Ireland in the -50kg junior (under 18 years) female category.
There were 18 in my category so to get to the final, I had four fights.   Each fight has two rounds (Round 1 and round 2), each round is two minutes long with a one minute break in between each round. So in total the fight is four minutes long. There are four judges sitting in each corner of the ring which is 8x8 meters (It is called a ring even though its square in shape). The judges determine who wins and loses. You score points by punching or kicking to the head or chest area. It is 3 points for a kick to the head, 2 points for a kick to the body (chest area) and 1 point for a punch to the body (chest area) or head.

I fought Germany in my first round, Russia in my second round, Poland in my third round and the other Irish competitor (who got the second slot) in the final. I won all my fights. It was fantastic that the two Irish competitors medalled first and second in the -50kg category. I still find it difficult to believe that I have a European gold medal and a title, European Champion!

The Championship was a huge success for Ireland. Our junior competitors are ranked as the best over-all juniors in Europe as we took home 8 gold medals, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals!

Squash

Congratulations to Breanne Flynn on her great achievements in Squash
lst in the Ulster and Connaught Junior Open, 3rd in the Carlow & Munster Senior Open and 9th in the Nordic Countries Junior Open in Sweden.  Well Done, Breanne.

Equestrian Club

We started the Equestrian League on a lovely cold and rainy day. The competitions were held in Kilossery Lodge on Sunday the 23rd of October. Well done to Zoë Coakley, Fiona Carey, Doireann Boylan and Abby Coakley who took part in the individual and team competitions. Zoë had a very good round in the individuals with only 4 faults and with an unfortunate 12 faults in the team. Fiona was clear in the individuals and unfortunately had 4 faults in the team. Abby had an unlucky 8 faults in the individuals and 4 faults in the team. Doireann had 4 faults in the individuals and 4 faults in the team. Not a bad day’s riding as the weather conditions were very bad. Hopefully we will improve our scores in the next league.

Junior C v Sion Hill, 22nd October 2011

The Junior C's unfortunately lost 1-0 to a strong Sion Hill side in their second Leinster League match. The girls defended brilliantly, however, putting a stop to several further attempts after the goal went in. Unfortunately, they couldn't manage to equalize, despite a great team performance. Niamh Kyne, Robyn Parker and Julie Masterson all had great games, but Player of the Match was awarded to Ruth McCormack for an absolutely outstanding performance at centre back.

Minor A’s v The Teresians, 22nd October 2011

Minors A’s played Teresians today in their second league match. First half saw Loreto dominating the game with lots of shots on goal. We eventually got the goal from a direct shot on goal from the top of the circle by Tanya Massey. The second half saw our defence under a lot of pressure but they cleared it well, with Ciara Griffin scoring a brilliant goal. Well done to the whole team who played super, with special mention to our two players of the match Ciara Beatty and Jenny Lambe.

Junior A’s v Newbridge, 20th October 2011

The Junior A's second Leinster League fixture against Newbridge proved to be a very tense and exciting game. The girls played brilliantly for the first 20 minutes, and were by far the better team, with most of the possession and plenty of action around the Newbridge goalmouth. Newbridge were dangerous on the counter-attack however, and grabbed their opportunity to score, the first time they entered our circle, which took the wind out of our sails for a while. Luckily, however, Aoife Corcoran equalized just before half-time to make it 1-1. The girls picked up the pace again in the second half, with Corinne Henry-Bezy setting up Hannah Lynch perfectly for the second goal, with about 15 minutes to go. Newbridge did not give up easily however, and our defence endured intense pressure, including a string of short corners right up to the final whistle. Joint Player of the Match was awarded to Corinne Henry-Bezy and Sarah O' Dwyer . The Junior A's now have 2 wins from 2 in the Leinster League – let's hope this keeps up

Cross Country Competition

On Wednesday the 12th of October, a group of cross country runners from Ist to 5th year represented our school at the cross country competition that took place in Santry. The weather was perfect for a run out in the open and the atmosphere was brilliant! There were over 100 minors running in the race and the distance they ran was 1000m. It was a very good experience for our first years and they really enjoyed it! Sarah Torrans and Clara McCormack came 6th and 8th place in the minor girls race which an amazing achievement. There were also quite a lot of juniors and intermediate runners. Our intermediate team came third over-all which was outstanding, with Aoife O’ Reilly coming 5th place in their 2500m race. And last but not least, Breanne Flynn came 12th place in the senior 2500m. The results of the day were really good and everyone who completed the race received a t-shirt as a souvenir to remember the day! The girls really enjoyed the day and we will hopefully be taking part in the cross country competition in Blackrock.

Junior B v St Andrews, 15th October 2011

The Junior B team held St Andrew's to a tense 0-0 draw in their first league game of the season. Work rate was excellent throughout the match, with Fiona Casey and Anna Woods strong in midfield. St. Andrew's began to look threatening shortly before half time, but the defence, in particular Katie Doherty, ensured there was no way through. The second half saw Loreto begin to dominate the match, with plenty of possession and shots on goal, but unfortunately the much needed goal never came.

Minor B v St Andrews, 15th October 2011

Minor B's had a great game against St Andrews on Saturday. They were very strong from the start, with great ball control and excellent passing. Martha O'Riordan got a chance at goal in the first half, taking the goalie on and scored a great goal. The second half saw no goals conceded on either side, leaving Loreto with 1-0 victory in their second league match. Player of the match going to Martha O'Riordan.

All Ireland Inter Schools Sailing Regatta

The all-Ireland inter sailing regatta took place in Sutton Dinghy Club on the 1st and 2nd of October 2011. We all met up (Peig, Nicole, Freya and Eilish) at the sailing club at 10 o’ clock to register our boats. It was an awful day and we got absolutely soaked before we launched. There were light winds and foggy conditions so we didn’t think that we would launch. We all rigged our boats and got into our wet gear. We then went to the briefing and were told that we were going sailing. We launched at half 12 and set out on the water for the day in lovely sailing conditions. We all raced two races but Peig couldn’t sail the second race because one of the ropes snapped.  Freya, Nicole and Eilish continued racing and finished the race. We all came in wet and cold.

On Sunday we arrived down to the club with some wind but by the time we were launching the wind had dropped completely so we were not happy. We all went to start the race but it had to be abandoned so we played a game of pirates and had fun. We then went in and got our boats ready and went home

Overall the weekend was great fun and we all had a great time.

Camogie Shield Victory for Loreto Seniors

The Senior Camogie team won the Senior Dublin Camogie Shield as they defeated Coláiste Chilliain in the final last Monday in O’Toole Park.  Lethal finishing in the first half would prove to be the difference between the sides as Loreto scored seven first half goals.  Loreto played with the breeze in the first half but that didn’t bother Coláiste Chilliain as they got the first score of the game when they struck for a goal.  Loreto recovered well but failed to convert any of their initial chances.  Niamh O’Brien settled the Loreto nerves when she finished to the net to draw the sides’ level.  A great goal from Aisling King followed to give Loreto a lead that they would never lose.  With Alison Stenson, Brigitte Walsh and Deirdre Johnstone dominating the midfield battle, Loreto continued to create chances.  Deirdre Johnstone got on the score sheet next as her shot flew into the net.  Coláiste Chilliain stayed in touch with another goal before Orla Core made a great run to collect a pass in front of goal and bury it in the net.  Eleanor Buggy hit a point before good pressure from Niamh O’Brien forced a loose clearance that allowed Eleanor Buggy to score another Loreto goal.  This was followed by another from Deirdre Johnstone but a third Coláiste Chilliain goal kept them in touch at the break.  Loreto now had to play against the breeze but an early goal and a point from Eleanor Buggy provided Loreto with a comfortable lead.  Coláiste Chilliain did begin to make inroads into the lead but a goal and a point from Aisling King and two Deirdre Johnstone points meant that Loreto held on for a clear victory.  This was a great performance from the Loreto team.  The girls recovered from the disappointment of losing the championship final last year to winning some silverware this year.  Well done girls.

Last Thursday (5/5) the Senior Gaelic team were defeated by Dunshaughlin in the Senior Leinster Gaelic Final.  Spectators were treated to an entertaining game of football played between two excellent sides.  Loreto played against the breeze in the first half and the game remained very close for the opening ten minutes with Caroline Brogan and Emma Colgan kicking points for Loreto.  Dunshaughlin also hit some early points and a lucky goal gave them a three point lead.  Dunshaughlin’s superior physical strength allowed them to get the upper hand for the remainder of the half as they kicked some fine points and got another goal to open up a decent gap between the teams.  However the Loreto team never gave up and points from Emma Colgan and Sarah Powell (2) meant that Loreto only trailed by seven points at the break.  Loreto began the second half well as they created plenty of chances.  Unfortunately we didn’t take enough of these chances, although credit must go to the Dunshaughlin defence for the pressure they put on the Loreto forwards.  Points from Emma Colgan (2), Sarah Powell and Caroline Brogan did reduce the gap but Dunshaughlin struck for a goal on the counter attack.  With twenty minutes remaining Clare Kelly struck for a goal to reduce the deficit to just four points.  Unfortunately the huge effort the Loreto team had put into the game so far began to tell as Dunshaughlin went up the field and kicked a series of four points in a row.  This Loreto team never surrenders until the final whistle and they came back strongly again with Caroline Brogan striking a great shot to the back of the net.  The last five minutes saw Loreto attack again and again but they just couldn’t get make another breakthrough as the wave of Dunshaughlin defenders in front of their goal held firm.  With three minutes remaining Loreto were denied a penalty when the referee failed to spot a clear foul on Deirdre Johnstone and the game ended on a scoreline of Loreto College 2-9 Dunshaughlin 3-11.  Over fifty schools entered this competition and for Loreto to end the year as Dublin Champions and Leinster runners up is a fantastic achievement for this talented and dedicated group of players.  Well done girls.

Loreto into Leinster Senior Gaelic Final

Having won the Dublin Championship, the Senior Gaelic team made the trip to Kilkenny to play Grennan College in the Leinster semi-final in Thomastown yesterday (30/3).  A great start from the Loreto team was the key to victory as they raced into a 6 point lead.  A Catherine Martin interception was worked up the field until Aisling King calmly slotted the ball into the Grennan net to begin the scoring.  This was followed by points from Emma Colgan, King and Clare Kelly.  Grennan fought back and got on the scoreboard with a well taken goal.  Loreto responded well to this slight set back as Caroline Brogan and Lorna Colgan reasserted their dominance around the middle of the field.  Orla Core was winning a lot of possession in the half forward line and moving it forward well and this dominance paid off when Alison Smith finished a good team move by putting the ball in the corner of the net.  More points from King and Colgan extended the Loreto lead.  At this point Grennan dropped an extra player back into their full back line to put extra pressure on the free scoring Loreto forwards.  A long ball into the Loreto full back line was forced into the net and Grennan then followed this up by getting their first point of the game to close the gap to four points.  Once again Loreto went forward with purpose and Caroline Brogan scored a goal to increase the gap between the teams.  Both sides had further chances in the first half but Aisling King’s shot came back off the crossbar while good goalkeeping from Elaine Mongan kept the Grennan forwards at bay.  The second half was a tight affair as Grennan retained their extra defender.  This allowed Catherine Martin to dominate the area in front of the Loreto goal while Helen Lynch and Roisin O’Donovan kept a tight rein on the Grennan full forward line.  Grennan struck for a quick goal but Loreto responded with three excellent points from Aisling King.  Loreto had some chances to extend their lead but a great Deirdre Johnstone shot rebounded off the crossbar as did another Aisling King shot.  With Niamh O’Brien, Deirdre Murphy and Eimear Linehan winning a lot of ball and pushing forward from the half back line Loreto kept creating chances and this allowed Emma Colgan (2) and Aisling King to kick points.  While Grennan finished strongly by kicking four points Loreto held on for the victory on a scoreline of Loreto College 3-11 Grennan College 3-5.  The girls now move on to the Leinster Final, another first for GAA in the school.  Well done.

Leinster Schools Table Tennis Cup Semi –Finals & Finals – Monday 28th March

This year saw the first ever appearance of Loreto, Stephen’s Green in the Leinster Schools semi-finals and finals.  The event took place in the IWA sports hall and saw many schools taking part in the various age groups both boys and girls.

In the semi-final of the Secondary Schools event our 1st team of Emily O’Shea, Katie Havel, Alyce Grant and Julie Masterson met St Tiernan’s of Ballinteer in the semi-final.  The girls played really well but were up against a much more experienced team and were beaten 4:1 with Julie winning our only match.

Our 2nd team of Ellen Wilde, Hannah Taylor, Flora Piquet and Niamh Ryan  got a bye into the final so they too had to play against St Tiernan’s  who have all been playing for at least three years and our 1st years are in their  first competitive season.  The team competed really well and had very close matches with our only winner being Hannah who came from behind to snatch her singles match deuce in the fifth set.

Congratulations to both teams for doing so well.

Loreto Under14 Gaelic team open Leinster Championship with a win

The Loreto Under 14 Gaelic team defeated Holy Faith Clontarf (24/3) yesterday in the first round of the Leinster Championship.  This was a great game of football with both sides capable of getting great scores but also able to tackle and dispossess their opponents.  The game was a very close contest throughout and for most of the match there was only a score between the teams.  Loreto began well with Ellie Wilde kicking a point.  Holy Faith hit back with a point of their own before Emma Colgan and Ellie Wilde got further Loreto scores.  Holy Faith then had a period of dominance but great pressure from the Loreto full back line forced them to kick a number of wides.  They did manage to score a goal and a point but a great save from Katie McGuiness stopped them from extending their lead.  A great interception from Alice MacDonald led to another Loreto score as Ciara Barry put over a point.  At this stage Loreto had their best spell of the match as Fiona Gallagher, Hannah Keartland and Molly Fergus began to dominate the half back line.  This allowed them to send quick ball into the Loreto forward line.  This resulted in some well taken Loreto scores as Aisling Stokes, Ellie Wilde and Shannon Rock hit points while Aisling Stokes also scored a goal.  Holy Faith managed to score a goal on the counterattack and they finished the first half scoring with a point to leave the score Loreto College 1-7 Holy Faith 2-3 at half time.  Holy Faith dominated the opening period of the second half as they hit three unanswered points.  Emma Colgan responded for the green with a goal.  Another goal and a point from Holy Faith meant that Loreto were three points down with about ten minutes to go.  The Loreto team were determined not to be defeated and they put in a fantastic effort for the remainder of the match.  Emma Colgan and Anna Woods got on top in midfield and two points from Shannon Rock and a point from Aisling Stokes levelled the game.  Emma Colgan then charged forward from midfield and grabbed another goal to give Loreto the lead.  Holy Faith managed to kick a point but the Loreto defence held firm and the game finished with Loreto ahead  by two points.  The final score was Loreto College 3-10 Holy Faith 3-8.

Loreto defeated in Junior Leinster Quarter Final

A strong team from Hartstown Community School defeated Loreto College in the Under 16 Leinster Championship Quarter Final yesterday (21/3).  Loreto started brightly playing against the breeze with Emma Colgan opening the scoring with a well taken point after clever play from Alison Smith and Eimear Linehan.  Unfortunately Hartstown responded quickly with two points to put them into the lead.  Hartstown began to dominate proceedings and were physically stronger and able to gather possession easier then the Loreto team.  However the Loreto backs worked hard to pressurise the Hartstown forwards.  Hartstown extended their lead with some well taken points but Loreto fought back with some scores of their own from Emma Colgan.  Two goals in the second part of the first half gave Hartstown a big ten point lead at the break.  However Loreto showed great spirit and determination and began to close the gap in the second half.  Emma Colgan scored a goal and two points and suddenly the game was back in the balance.  Hartstown struck again to increase their lead and the sides swapped a few points before a Sarah Keartland goal and points from Deirdre Murphy and Helen Moran reduced the lead to four points.  Once again Hartstown were able to strike for a goal before Elaine Begley responded with another Loreto goal.  Loreto had a few chances to get within a score but Hartstown defended strongly and counterattacked to score two late goals to secure their victory.  This was a high scoring, exciting game of football between two good sides.  Loreto struggled at times in the first half to maintain possession but the way they fought back to put Hartstown under a lot of pressure in the second half shows the great character of this team.  The girls have played some great football this year and it is a great achievement to have reached the Leinster Quarter Final.  Well done on a great year.

Loreto College: Senior Gaelic Dublin Champions

Loreto College won a Gaelic Football trophy for the first time as they defeated Dominican College, Griffith Avenue in the Senior Dublin final yesterday (9/3).  The game was played on an excellent, fast pitch in Ringsend (many thanks to Clann na Gael) with a significant wind blowing down the field.  Loreto were playing with the breeze in the first half but that didn’t bother Dominican College as they hit the first two points of the game.  Loreto were under pressure but a good kickout from Elaine Mongan and clever play by Alison Smith saw Aisling King collect the ball in the centre forward position.  She went on a great solo run and slotted the ball home to give Loreto the lead.  The opening 15 minutes were very exciting as both sides created chances and got scores.  Points from Emma Colgan and Caroline Brogan extended the Loreto lead before Dominican College scored a goal to level the game.  Two well taken points from Clare Kelly gave Loreto the advantage again before Emma Colgan scored a goal to increase the gap between the teams.  Dominican College fought back again and were denied a goal by a great Elaine Mongan save.  They had further goal chances but with Roisin O’Donovan, Catherine Martin and Aoife Lawlor playing well in the full back line, Dominican College had to settle for a few points.  Loreto finished the first half very strongly with Aisling King scoring another goal and point and Deirdre Johnstone finishing a great team move for another goal to leave Loreto 3 goals ahead at the break.  The Loreto team knew that this game was far from won as the wind was picking up and they would be playing against it in the second half.  Dominican College began the half very well as they scored a goal within the first few minutes.  Loreto were struggling to get the ball out of their half but a quick breakaway and some good passing from the forwards allowed Deirdre Johnstone to score a goal to restore the three goal cushion.  Dominican College kept pushing forward but with Caroline Brogan in superb form and Eimear Linehan and Deirdre Murphy dominating in defence Loreto were able to break up most of the Dominican attacks.  This allowed Lorna Colgan, Niamh O’Brien and Orla Core to gather possession around the middle and they pushed forward laying off the ball to players in space.  Great movement and passing by the Loreto forwards set up Alison Smith who made the game safe with two quick well taken goals.  Points from Emma Colgan (2) and Aisling King as well as a Clare Kelly penalty and another Alison Smith goal finished off the game on a scoreline of Loreto College 9-8 Dominican College 3-8.  After having been defeated in the closing stages of last year’s final the Loreto team showed great determination to come back and win the senior title this year.  They put in a fantastic team performance as they moved the ball quickly and accurately around the large pitch.  As Dublin Champions the girls now take part in the Leinster Semi-Finals.  Many of these girls were heavily involved in setting up Gaelic in the school four years ago and have been playing great football ever since.  Well done to all concerned.

Camogie -Loreto into Leinster Quarter Finals

The Loreto College Under 16 gaelic team defeated Gaelcholáiste Reachrann yesterday (3/3) to qualify for the Quarter Finals of the Leinster Championship.  This was a very close and exciting encounter as the lead changed hands on a number of occasions.  Each side had periods of dominance but a combination of good defending and clever score taking saw Loreto emerge with a three point victory.  Loreto struggled in the opening few minutes as Reachrann got the opening two scores of the game.  However Loreto recovered quickly with Emma Colgan getting a goal from Loreto’s first attack of the game.  Colgan added two points but Reachrann also pointed as both sets of forwards looked dangerous.  The Loreto defence started to apply more pressure and a clever interception by Aisling Stokes began a Loreto move that led to Anna Woods getting a second goal.  Reachrann fought back with a goal of their own and followed that up with another goal from the penalty spot to edge ahead again.  The sides traded points before good play from the Loreto forward line allowed Aoife Gallagher to set up Emma Colgan for another goal.  This was followed by a period of Reachrann dominance as they added a few points followed by another goal to move two points ahead.  The half ended with Emma Colgan shooting over another point to leave the minimum between the teams at the break on a scoreline of Loreto College 3-4 Gaelcholáiste Reachrann 3-5.  Once again Reachrann began the half the stronger but strong defending by Loreto kept them scoreless in the opening few minutes.  Loreto played some exceptional football in the second half with Deirdre Murphy, Eimear Linehan, Helen Moran and Shannon Rock winning a ton for possession for Loreto and Breanne Flynn and Emma Colgan causing a lot of problems for the Reachrann defence.  Emma Colgan struck a goal to reassert the Loreto lead but Reachrann countered with two quick points in a row.  A good point from Eimear Linehan and a calm finish from Anna Woods for a goal extended the Loreto advantage.  Reachrann got a goal themselves and hit a few points to reduce the margin to two.  Reachrann had a good spell as the game entered the final ten minutes but great defending including two last ditch blocks from Catherine Martin and Fiona Gallagher kept them at bay.  A Deirdre Murphy free extended the Loreto lead to the three points.  Murphy followed this up with a stunning solo run from midfield to fire over another point.  Reachrann got the last score of the game but Loreto ran out winners on a scoreline of Loreto College 6-7 Gaelcholáiste Reachrann 4-10.  The girls can now look forward to a match in the Leinster Quarter Finals.

The Minor A team played their 1st Loreto League game of this year this Saturday in YMCA versus Loreto Dalkey. The first half was played brilliantly by all.  We had numerous shots on goal but Dalkey slipped one goal in nearing the end of the first half. The 2nd half went very well and most of the play was up in their half where we had many near goals including one that hit the back of the net but was disallowed by the ref.  With about 7 minutes to go, Aoife Corcoran scored an excellent goal bringing the end result to 1 all. Sarah O’Dwyer gave an excellent performance and was woman of the match.

Accurate Shooting puts Loreto into Senior Camogie Shield Final

Some accurate first half shooting from the Loreto forward line put the Senior Camogie team into the Dublin Shield Final.  The Shield semi-final between Holy Faith, Clontarf and Loreto College took place on a muddy pitch last Monday (31/1).  Despite the tough underfoot conditions Loreto began brightly with Kate O’Dwyer knocking over the first score of the game.  This was followed by great long range strikes from Deirdre Johnstone and Eleanor Buggy.  Loreto continued their dominance with Niamh O’Brien hitting two quick goals, followed by points from Amy Ryan, Deirdre Johnstone and Orla Core.  Loreto could have put up an even bigger score but for some fine play by the Holy Faith goalkeeper and defence.  The second half was a much closer affair as Holy Faith began to dominate possession.  They struck a good goal and created some other goal chances but were denied by some good saves from Loreto keeper Katie Conaty.  However throughout the half Loreto kept the scoreboard ticking over with points from Kate O’Dwyer (2), Deirdre Johnstone (2), Eleanor Buggy and Anna Woods.  Loreto ended the game victorious on a score line of Loreto College 2-12 Holy Faith 1-4.

Loreto into Dublin Senior Gaelic Football Final

A strong performance from the Loreto Senior Gaelic Football team has qualified them for the Dublin schools final as they defeated Gaelcholáiste Reachrann last Thursday (20/1).  The foundations for the victory were laid in the first few minutes as Loreto struck three early goals to build up a lead they would never surrender.  Quick passing and clever movement from Clare Kelly, Sarah Powell, Michaela Doyle-Geary and Deirdre Johnstone created a series of chances allowing Aisling King (twice) and Emma Colgan to find the net.  This was followed by a period of dominance from Gaelcholáiste Reachrann.  However solid defending from the Loreto full back line of Róisin O’Donovan, Catherine Martin and Aoife Lawlor and a superb save from Elaine Mongan limited Gaelcholáiste Reachrann to 1-2 in this period.  As the half went on Caroline Brogan and Lorna Colgan were beginning to dominate the midfield battle.  Loreto began to create chances again and three points from Aisling King and a goal and a point from Emma Colgan left Loreto well ahead at the break on a scoreline of Loreto College 5-4 Gaelcholáiste Reachrann 1-2.  Gaelcholáiste Reachrann opening the scoring in the second half with a well struck point.  After an initial period of pressure Loreto began to get the upper hand again.  The half back line of Niamh O’Brien, Deirdre Murphy and Eimear Linehan were cutting out the majority of Gaelcholáiste Reachrann’s attacks.  Clare Kelly added a point before Sarah Powell finished to the corner of the net to increase the Loreto lead.  A well struck long range free from Caroline Brogan completed the scoring.  The final score was Loreto College 6-6 Gaelcholáiste Reachrann 1-3.  With this win Loreto are into the Dublin final, the winners of which proceed to the Leinster Semi-Final.

Junior B v High School

15 January 2011

The Junior B's played some fantastic hockey to pull off an impressive 3-1 victory over High School in their final group stage match of the Leinster League.  They took the lead early on, with Sorcha Minnock making the most of an opportunity at the top right of the circle.  Captain Michelle Horan was unlucky not to make the scoreboard shortly afterwards, when her short corner strike veered just wide of the left post, but the Green continued to look threatening and their efforts were rewarded with Jill O' Farrell's goal, to make it 2-0 at half time.  High School came back fighting in the second half, and found the net after a dangerous break.  The Green learnt their lesson and began to tighten their defence accordingly.  Meanwhile, Catherine Parsons and Judith Kelly each displayed an exceptional degree of skill and speed up the right wing, earning themselves a well-deserved joint 'man-of-the-match'.  Their efforts resulted a string of short corners, one of which Jill O' Farrell managed to convert.  Final score Loreto on the Green 3, High School 1.  The girls now have three wins (St. Dominic's, John Scottus, High School) under their belt, coupled with two unlucky defeats (Muckross, Beaufort).  They are now eagerly awaiting the other results from this section to find out if they have progressed to the knockout stages of the competition.  Meanwhile, their Loreto League campaign begins this Saturday 22nd, when they will face Loreto Bray, away (at 9am unfortunately for supporters!). Loreto into Knock Out Stages of the Leinster Junior Gaelic Football Championship

On Monday (17/1) Loreto College defeated St Finians, Swords to finish first in their group and qualify for the last 16 of the Leinster Junior Gaelic Football Championship.  It was a must win game for Loreto who knew that they had to win to finish level on points with Skerries and St Finians.  This meant the players knew they also had to put up a good score as points difference would decide who qualified for the next stage.  Loreto began well with Deirdre Murphy and Eimear Linehan dominating the midfield battle.  After a few chances went astray Emma Colgan struck for a goal to give Loreto a lead that they would never lose.  Loreto were moving possession around well with Helen Moran and Michaela Doyle-Geary getting on a lot of ball and transferring it into the full forward line.  This allowed Loreto to convert their possession into scores as Breanne Flynn (twice) and Elaine Begley struck for goals and Deirdre Murphy, Emma Colgan, Helen Moran and Breanne Flynn scored points.  However it was not one way traffic as St Finians were a dangerous side when in possession.  The Loreto defence coped well with Catherine Martin winning a lot of ball in front of the Loreto goal.  The half time score was Loreto College 4-4 St Finians 1-2.  Loreto were under more pressure in the second half as St Finians fought to get back into the game.  However the Loreto defence held firm with the half back line of Muireann Quinn, Aisling Murchan and Aisling Stokes then launching quick counter attack ball into the Loreto forward line.  This allowed Breanne Flynn to strike for three second half goals.  Emma Colgan added a well struck penalty after she had been fouled in front of goal.  Points from Colgan, Aoife Gallagher and Deirdre Murphy sealed the win on a scoreline of Loreto College 8-7 St Finians 4-2.

Loreto College:      Katie McCarthy, Fiona Gallagher, Catherine Martin, Shannon Rock, Muireann Quinn, Aisling Murchan, Aisling Stokes, Deirdre Murphy (0-2), Eimear Linehan, Michaela Doyle-Geary, Helen Moran (0-1), Elaine Begley (1-0), Rebecca Fitzpatrick, Breanne Flynn (5-1), Emma Colgan (2-2), Aoife Gallagher (0-1), Alice MacDonald, Anna Woods, Hannah Keartland, Caitlin Brownlow, Lauren Healy.

Hockey Match Reports

The Minor A team played a fantastic match against Alexandra College on Saturday 15th January, where they had a well deserved win 1-0. The first half was played extremely well and the defence was strong keeping out any Alex shots on goal. With great encouragement from Mrs. Barrett and the parents on sideline, the mid-fields and the forwards did an excellent job of keeping the ball up in the opposition’s half. Nearing the end of the first half Aoife Corcoran scored a brilliant goal sending us into the second half 1-0 up. The second half was played brilliantly by all and Jane Garry did a super job and got a well deserved man of the match.

The Minor A team played Newbridge on Wednesday 12th January, where they were unfortunately beaten 3-0. The first half was played very well by all and defence was strong but one goal was scored by Newbridge nearing the end of the first half. In the 2nd half the whole team tried extremely hard and the forwards were brilliant and had many shots on goal but with no luck. Our sweeper Emma Horan did a super job and got a well-deserved player of the match.

Hard luck to the Senior A Team who were narrowly defeated by Mercy Coolock in the SBAI B U19 final.  It was an exciting game which was contested right up to the last minute.

In the first quarter Loreto got off to a great start with some skilful baskets, including several three pointers.  They then however missed a number of chances while Mercy scoring several consecutive baskets brought the teams level coming up to half time.

The second half was even more thrilling than the first, with both teams giving everything they had in pursuit of victory. Unfortunately, in the middle of the third quarter, the Loreto team prospects of victory suffered a severe blow when Brigitte Walsh, one of the team’s best shooters, fell over on her ankle and had to be taken off injured.  However, the team stayed focused and were winning by two points going into the last quarter.

Mercy were however still very much in the game and with some fine scores from their point guard, found themselves in the lead.  Loreto kept going to the last second but could not get the necessary scores to take the title.  Although the team were very disappointed they are still in the competition through the backdoor system.

Final Score: 28 – 34

All Ireland inter schools Regatta 2010

The all-Ireland inter schools sailing regatta was held at Sutton dinghy club on the weekend of 25/26th September 2010.   Loreto College, St. Stephen’s Green was represented by Peig Staunton (3rd year) sailing her Laser 4.7 and Freya McCrum (1st year) sailing her Pico.   This was a big challenge for all the sailors taking part and there was a great sense of fun at the event.   Saturday was a bit wild but two races were completed.   Unfortunately on Sunday the wind disappeared and racing was abandoned.   Instead, sailors had fun playing pirates and capsizing.   Two other Loreto schools took part – Loreto Balbriggan and Loreto Wexford.   In total 165 sailors in 132 boats took part in the regatta.  Peig was placed 29th with Freya coming in at 77th (in her first regatta).   As a team they were placed 21st out of 33 teams which was an excellent result.   Roll on 2011!

Loreto defeat Coláiste Chilliain in Senior Camogie Championship

Loreto put themselves back into contention for a semi-final spot in the Senior Camogie Championship with a victory over Coláiste Chilliain.  Loreto started well with Eleanor Buggy and Brigitte Walsh winning the midfield battle and sending plenty of ball into the forward line.  Sarah McCarthy got the first score of the game as she blocked a clearance by the Coláiste Chilliain goalkeeper.  Coláiste Chilliain did create some chances but good tackling from Orla Kelly and Ciara O'Hare as well as solid goalkeeping from Deirdre Johnstone kept them at bay.  A long range point from Alison Stenson added to the Loreto score before Orla Core struck a powerful shot to the roof of the net to give Loreto a half time lead of Loreto College 2-1 Coláiste Chilliain 0-0.  The second half was a closer affair with Coláiste Chilliain creating a number of chances.  However some excellent saves from Deirdre Johnstone kept the Loreto lead intact.  With Alison Stenson and Emma O'Leary dominating in the half back line Loreto began to get on top again.  A good point from Brigitte Walsh was followed by a goal from Sinead Henry-Bezy.  The game finished Loreto 3-2 Coáiste Chilliain 0-0.

HOCKEY NEWS

Junior A v St. Andrews

Wednesday 6th October

The girls put in an outstanding performance to hold St Andrew's to a 0-0 draw in their second Leinster League fixture. The Booterstown school are a notoriously strong presence in Leinster schoolgirls hockey, and the absences of Alanah Quinsey (who is currently training with the Leinster U-16 Squad) and Sophie Masterson (who suffered a fractured thumb in a friendly at the weekend) placed an extra strain on our remaining players. The girls stepped up to the mark, however, and defended superbly from the offset. Aoife Kelly played out of her skin at right back, causing endless frustration to the opposition as she broke down a string of attacks. In midfield, both Tara Flood and captain Ciara Walsh put in an exceptional amount of hard work, and our efforts were nearly rewarded just before half-time when a strike from Ellen Masterson missed the left post by about half an inch. In the second half, the Green began to take the upper hand, and were arguably the stronger team, but despite great efforts from Hannah Brady and Laura Doherty, we just couldn't find the back of the net. A few worrying moments around our goalmouth towards the end left us relieved once the final whistle went, and the team now stride forward with a well-deserved four points from their first two games.

Senior Team v Our Lady’s

Saturday 2nd October

The senior a team had a fantastic performance on Saturday to win their first league match against Our Ladies Grove. The girls dominated the entire match with a great passing game. The team worked and passing payed off as 3 great goals were scored to secure the victory. Overall the whole team played great both on attack and defence, with particularly strong performances from Helen Lynch, Jane Fallon Byrne, Aishling Coclcough and Claire Kelly. Aoife Mc Elroy also had a clean sheet in goals with the help of a very hard working defensive line. This match sets the team off on a great roll for the season and we hope to improve even further.

Junior B v Dominican College Wicklow

Wednesday, 29th September

The Junior B team got off to a flying start, defeating Dominican College of Wicklow 4-0 in their first league fixture. Every member the enthusiastic panel of seventeen put in a great effort to help secure this victory. The Green looked strong from early on, but couldn't seem to find the back of the net, until Emma O'Leary eventually did so with a convincing push from the top right corner of the circle. Shortly afterwards, Alice O'Hagan scored our second goal, with her first touch of the game, having been subbed on for Sorcha Minnock only minutes before. Although the score line might not suggest it, our defenders were kept busy, with strong performances from Dearbhla Bolger and Claire O' Halloran in particular. Up front the goals kept coming: Eva Mc Inerny did well to finish off what started out as a rather sloppy short corner, while Jill O' Farrell's consistent effort throughout the entire game was rewarded when she scored the fourth and final goal of the game. The season is looking promising for our Juniors this year

Junior A v St Wolstans

Monday, 27th September

The Junior A team got their season off to a great start with a convincing 4-1 win over St. Wolstan's of Celbridge at Y.M.C.A. The Green dominated for most of the game, with goals from Laura Doherty, Alanah Quinsey and Eimear Linehan securing a 3-0 lead by half time. The second half saw Wolstan's begin to fight back a little, but impressive performances from Katie Bolger and Eimear Linehan in defence left them with no way through. Alanah Quinsey made easy work of a free-in just outside the circle, carrying the ball inside and slotting home for the second time with about ten minutes to go. St. Wolstan's remained determined not to go out without a fight, however. They were awarded a short corner on the final whistle, which they managed to convert, despite our defences' best efforts. Overall, it was an impressive performance from our Junior A's, a team made up of both third and fourth years, many of whom are playing together for the first time this season.

Senior Footballers open campaign with a Victory

Loreto College got their senior football campaign off to a good start with a victory over St Paul’s, Greenhills last Friday (1/10). St Paul’s got off to an excellent start and scored a goal and a point from their first two attacks. Loreto responded strongly but missed a few chances before Aisling King slotted a point to reduce the deficit. This was quickly followed by a superb point from Emma Colgan following a strong solo run. Emma Colgan then scored a goal to give Loreto a lead that they would never lose. With Lorna Colgan and Aisling King dominant in midfield, there was plenty of ball being sent into the Loreto forwards. After hitting the crossbar twice, Loreto began to build up a lead. Aisling Woodgate struck for two goals, Clare Kelly hit a goal and a point and a further point from Emma Colgan left Loreto in a stong position. Some good long range points from St. Paul’s kept them in touch at the break on a score line of Loreto College 4-4 St Paul’s 1-4. St Paul’s also began the second half strongly. Playing with the aid of the wind they hit three unanswered points to reduce the deficit to six. With Alison Smith and Eimear Linehan playing particularly well, Loreto began to assert their dominance once again. Emma Colgan hit a point followed by three from Aisling King. When Aisling Stokes was fouled in the box, Clare Kelly put the penalty away to put the result beyond doubt. A further goal from Aisling King and points from Mairéad Conway and Aisling Stokes pushed the Loreto total to 6-10. St Paul’s did create a number of chances but Catherine Martin was in exceptional form at full back and Roisin O'Donovan made some great saves in goals. In the end Loreto won on a score line of Loreto College 6-10 St Pauls 2-8. This was our first ever 'home' match so we would like to say a big thank you to Clan na Gael in Ringsend for the use of their pitch for some of our home matches this season.
