Farewell

We are saying goodbye to Ms. Barton, Mr. Campbell and Mrs Gibson as their long and distinguished professional careers come to an end and they have decided to move on to the next stage of their lives. Be it in the Art Room, with a kind word for the aspiring artist on a bad day, the Canteen with a warm cup of tea for a first year with ‘schoolitis’, or in the last 100 metres for the reluctant athlete, Mr Campbell, Mrs Gibson and Ms Barton knew and valued each student as unique, sometimes imperfect but always a work in progress. We wish them well and will sadly miss their support, friendship and example.

Prizegiving 2010

Prizes were presented for academic and sporting excellence during the year at a Ceremony on 20 May 2010. In addition, the following Perpetual Awards were presented.

The Denis O’Sullivan Medal

This medal has been awarded in recent years in memory of a past pupil Moyra Briody who was a gifted pianist with a golden voice. It is presented each year to the girl who gave the greatest contribution to singing in the school. This year the medal was awarded to Kayla Flynn.

The Frankie Rooney Award

Frankie Rooney was the music, choir and orchestra teacher from 1970 until she retired in 2003 and the prize bearing her name rewards excellence in music. This year the honour went to Diana Kissane.

The Charles Maguire Music Award

Charles Maguire was conductor of the senior orchestra for 20 years and gave his students an appreciation of good orchestral music. This shield is awarded each year to a talented and hard working musician. This year’s recipient was also honoured with an additional award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to music. The Charles Maguire Music Award was this year presented to Máire Ní Chearbhaill.

The Sr. Seraphia Science Award

Sr. Seraphia, who perished in the fire in 1986, was an inspiration to many science students who passed through Loreto and brought a real passion to her teaching of science. This year this award went to Catherine King.

The Mary Moloney History Award

Mary Moloney (1926-1994) was educated here at Loreto College. She built up a successful business with her husband and was keenly interested in national and world politics. In 1995, her children established the Mary Moloney prize to commemorate Mary, her interest in History and her affection for Loreto College. This year the award was presented to Caoimhe Kelly.

The Mary Ward Silver Salver

This Social Enterprise Award, which commemorates the life of Mary Ward, the founder of the Loreto order, is a way of showing the deep appreciation that the school feels for the commitment and personal initiative that a student has shown in her school career to date. This year the award went to Eva Cullinan.

The 175 English Debating Trophy

Loreto College has a long tradition of participation and success in debating championships both in Ireland and abroad. In recognition of this, the Leaving Certificate debaters of 2009 wanted to commemorate our 175th year by donating a Perpetual Debating Award to the school. The purpose of this award is to honour an individual who embodies the ideas of debating – someone who is confident and argumentative, whilst being respectful and a good listener. This year the award was presented to Emma McDonnell.

The Spirit Award

This Award is one of the most prestigious at the College. Each year it is given to a student who personifies the values of the school – generosity of spirit, dedication to excellence and, above all, a living testament to what it is to be a Loreto, St. Stephen’s Green girl. We look for perfection!

This year the award was presented to Lorna Begley.

The Mooney Shield of Excellence

This year the Shield is divided between the Senior Tennis Team (Loreto Senior Winners), Junior Tennis Team (Loreto Junior Winners), Senior A hockey team and the Loreto Athletics Team.

Sports Person of the Year

The joint winners of the Award this year were Kayla Flynn and Sarah Powell.

GAISCE – The President’s Award

Established in 1985, this is the country’s most prestigious and respected individual award programme. Gaisce currently operates in 126 countries. Throughout Ireland, schools and communities benefit from the amazing work of young people. The personal qualities that each participant must call upon are, among others, self-discipline, leadership ability, perseverance, dedication and, most importantly, caring skills. This encourages our young people to realise their potential as individuals, active citizens and future leaders.

Many of our current and past pupils have received their Bronze Award but this year, for the first time, 5 Silver Awards were presented. To receive this Award, students must complete 91 hours in the areas of sport, community involvement and personal skills in addition to a 50km hike which they completed last year with our Gaisce PAL, Ms. McCaul.

The five recipients of the Gaisce Silver Award were Aoife Kenny, Roisin Corcoran, Jenny Moloney, Hannah Lowry and Sarah Kelly.
