Dublin Post Primary Senior C Camogie Championship Final Report

Loreto finish strong to claim the Senior Camogie Title

Loreto College, St. Stephen’s  Green  just edged out Scoil Mhuire, Clane in a thrilling Dublin Post Primary Schools Camogie ‘C’  final played in Clanna Gael.  The game was well contested from the start with chances at a premium.  Clane opened the scoring with a well taken point and could have had an early goal if it wasn’t for a fine save by Orlaith Freaney in the Loreto goal.  A long range point from Alex Griffin levelled the game.  Clane responded with a well taken team point before Alex Griffin levelled the game once again.  Clane were on top at this stage and made this count when they finished a ball to the net after good approach play from their midfield.  Loreto finished the half the stronger with their defence, well marshalled by Ciara Griffin, getting on top.  This allowed them to take advantage of the wind and get more ball into their full forward line.  This paid off as Caoilainn McDaid struck for two goals before the break to put Loreto ahead.

An Alex Griffin point opened the second half before Clane responded with two points of their own.  Both teams had chances before a free from Alex Griffin put three between the teams once again.  Then a long ball out of defence from Leah O’Reilly was caught by Alex Griffin who finished to the net to give Loreto a two goal cushion.  However Clane kept fighting and were using the wind to move quick ball into their forwards.  They got their reward when they scored their second goal of the game before they levelled the game with another goal.  The teams were level as we entered the final  five minutes.  The Loreto defence held firm and a long clearance found Carolyn McCarthy who turned her player and was brought down as she headed towards the goal.  Alex Griffin fired the ball into the roof of the net from the resulting free to regain the momentum for Loreto.  She followed that up with a point before Carolyn McCarthy got the score of the game as she powered a shot on the turn into the top corner of the net.  This secured the victory for Loreto College  on a scoreline of Loreto College 5-5 Clane 3-4.

Thanks to all the 5th years that came along and provided such great vocal encouragement for the players throughout the game.
